The Challenge

As serial founders who discovered where buyers saw value after exit last time, Semeris wanted an early understanding of how outsiders might perceive their value. This could potentially inform strategic and investment decision-making so that the next exit might be even better. They sought a quick, first-pass third-party valuation that might serve as a baseline for investor discussions and help them maximise value upon exit. Beyond a numerical valuation, Semeris were looking to understand why and which parts of their business were perceived to be more valuable than others. By exploring their existing assets' value, Semeris hoped to gain a comprehensive perspective on where to focus their efforts, ultimately positioning themselves for long-term success. 

 

The Process 

Discover 

Semeris leveraged Intanify to harness the power of our knowledge graphs created with multiple IP experts to construct a comprehensive inventory of the most important parts of their business. By automating the discovery process, Intanify enabled Semeris to reach a first draft of their inventory in under an hour. Through Intanify’s Discover feature, Semeris built an initial inventory, which was then enriched with detailed asset data, in-depth examinations of relationships and dependencies between assets. Semeris has built a robust, deep foundation of technology, skills, processes and customer relationships; producing the inventory allowed it to be fully shown. This was the first step towards an industry-standard valuation of Semeris' multiple revenue streams and the insights derived from that valuation.

 With the application of industry-standard techniques on Semeris's prepped forecasts, Intanify enabled a valuation of each of Semeris's 10 revenue streams, offering a detailed breakdown of the value composition of the business. The platform provided a granular breakdown by revenue stream and individual asset, illuminating the intricate relationships between assets. Through this streamlined process, Intanify automated a first valuation of the key components of Semeris's business within the platform, completing the valuation step in around 25-30 minutes.  

Insights 

The inventory, complete with valuations, allowed Intanify's platform to generate visuals based on Semeris' data and facilitate even deeper analysis. The value map visual illustrated where the true value resided within the business, highlighting certain assets that were more valuable than initially expected. They plan to share this visual with the broader Semeris team to foster alignment on where the business's value is concentrated.  

Additionally, the asset graph visual communicated the densely interconnected relationships between Semeris' assets and was provided to the new CFO to accelerate a deep understanding of the business. 

 

 

With the ability to filter by asset or valuation, Semeris could easily break down and analyse the components driving the business. Backed by a comprehensive inventory ascribing quantifiable values to each key asset, the leadership team could confidently inform their strategy with reliable, data-driven insights into what truly mattered. 

 

Value-add 

At the outset, Semeris aimed to understand where value was truly created within their business so they could be even more informed in investment and strategic decision making. Intanify's platform enabled them to quantitatively visualise how that value could evolve over time and identify the key drivers behind it, by delineating previously nebulous assets, connecting them to other assets via relationships and calculating a floor value for them using industry standard methods.

With a fully articulated inventory valuing each revenue stream and underlying asset, complemented by relationship weightings from Semeris to highlight dependencies, the visuals powerfully communicated the business in a clear, insightful manner. These visualisations proved useful for external communications and in future onboarding of new leadership team members. 

 

 

Moreover, Intanify's moat visual captured two critical aspects of Semeris' competitive advantage that had previously been challenging to articulate. Grounding those explanations with real assets to show how they underpinned the moat provided concrete evidence.

 

 

The platform also generated best practice recommendations in a easy to view checklist – confirming where they’re performing well and what they need to bear in mind in future to continue protecting and building these assets. Semeris envisaged leveraging these as a jumping-off point for professional services to accelerate strategy execution. 

 

 

More than empowering Semeris to properly articulate the value they have already built, foster team discussions and highlight aspects of their competitive advantage; Intanify’s accelerated process gave them a clear and timely view of where they may need to engage an IP professional in the future.
